Speed-sinter protocols for multilayer 4Y/5Y zirconia

Ran three anterior units yesterday on a 95‑min speed cycle (peak 1540°C, 10‑min hold) in a Dekema AUSTROMAT using a multilayer 4Y/5Y disc at 0.7 mm finish, and saw excellent translucency but more edge chipping than our 7‑hour schedule. Has anyone quantified strength/phase effects (grain growth, cubic fraction) or dialed in green‑state support and post‑sinter finishing steps that stabilize margins under these rapid cycles?

Same here on a 95‑min/1540°C AUSTROMAT run — great translucency, brittle edges at 0.7 mm. We cut a thin “sacrificial collar” (about 0.2–0.3 mm) around incisal/line angles in the green, seat on zirconia/alumina beads, then remove post‑sinter with 30 µm diamonds under water; edge chipping vanished, and if you keep that cycle, add a slower 900→600°C ramp to ease stress.

Piggybacking @cbecker05: on a 95‑min/1540°C AUSTROMAT run I cut the hold to 8 min and added a 5°C/min controlled cool from 900→600°C — edge chipping at 0.7 mm dropped noticeably. I also sinter with the 5Y incisal down on zirconia beads and leave about 0.1 mm on line angles to polish back post‑sinter; any sandblast (>1 bar) brought the chips right back.

I cut edge chips by sintering on a shallow bed of 1 mm alumina beads (like a little hammock for margins) and leaving a tiny green-state web across sharp embrasures, then removing it after with fine rubber wheels under water — no coarse diamonds or post‑glaze blasting. Also try rotating the multilayer so the thinnest incisal isn’t sitting in the pure 5Y zone; @markT_1974’s cooling note helps, but that layer orientation tweak alone made the biggest difference for me.
